Obituary for Eugene J. Zoul

Eugene Jaroslav Zoul, 94, died peacefully on Tuesday, November 19, 2019, at Oak Park Arms in Oak Park, Illinois, after a lengthy illness. Born on July 12, 1925, in Chicago, Gene attended Morton High School in Cicero, Illinois, before joining the Marines at the age of 18. He served with pride and honor during his years in the service, including stops in Hawaii and, significantly, several months participating in the battle of Iwo Jima during World War II.

After the war, he held a number of jobs before settling into a long career in the printing industry. At this time, he also met the love of his life, Audrey Plazak, and the two lovebirds married in 1948, a union that lasted for over 71 years. After working for several printing companies in the Chicago area, Mr. Zoul began working for Tidd Printing, eventually buying the business and running it alongside his wife and daughter in Berwyn. After sixty years of work devoted to Tidd Printing, Gene finally retired in 2015 at the age of 90. In addition to his successful career as a printer and small business owner, Gene was a devoted family man who also enjoyed spending long hours working in his yard and around the family home in Burr Ridge where he lived for over thirty years. Mr. Zoul was proud not only of his service in the war and his professional accomplishments, but also his Czech heritage. Fluent in the Czech language, Gene loved nothing more than interacting with family members in his native language, dining at various Bohemian restaurants in the area, and even traveling to Czechoslovakia on several occasions. He was a lifetime lover of sweets, red wine, and the Chicago White Sox.

Mr. Zoul was a devoted and loving father to his two children and a doting grandfather to his two grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Audrey, he is survived by a fabulous and loving daughter, Pamela Poloncsik. He was preceded in death by his wonderful son, Eugene Jaroslav Zoul, Jr. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by a granddaughter, Erin (Jason Towe) Poloncsik and a grandson, Jonathan Poloncsik; sister Camilla (John) Coppinger; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jaroslav Zoul and Antoinette (nee Jedlicka) Zoul; his sister, Blanche (Albino) Giusto; and his brother, Robert (Geraldine) Zoul.

At Gene’s request, no service will be held. For online condolences, visit
