Charles Emil Cairo

Reverend Dr. Charles Emil Cairo passed away on June 18, 2026, in Maywood, Illinois, from natural causes at the age of 81.

He was preceded in death by his father, Emil Lawrence Cairo, his mother, Louise A. Cairo, née Condux, and his sister Roseanne Clark née Cairo. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jane Nakashima Cairo. He also leaves behind his children: Charles (Karen), Charlene Emme (Michael), Jeanie Cairo (Mike Colella), and Joel (Eileen); nine grandchildren: Katie, Dominic, Anthony, Giorgio, Lily, Violet, Zachary (Yessenia), Jacob, and Grace; five great-grandchildren: Kevin, Michelle, Isabella, Zachary, and Amelia.

Born on October 2, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, Charles lived a life marked by devotion, service, scholarship, and faith. He was a Christian whose life reflected a deep commitment to helping others, and he carried that calling into every role he held. He will be remembered as a loving, passionate, and funny man whose presence brought warmth, wisdom, and encouragement to all who crossed his path.

Charles served his country in the United States Air Force as a photoreconnaissance photographer, and after his military service, he went on to work many years as a signature photographer. His career included serving as an adult probation officer for the Cook County Department of Corrections and also encompassed meaningful ministry and counseling work serving as head chaplain at Madden Mental Health Center, Bishop Overseer at the Evangelical Free Baptist Convention, and as a Therapist, Life Coach, and Pastoral Counselor at Fire Escape Counseling Services. 

Charles pursued his education with seriousness and purpose, earning a Doctor of Theology from International Seminary. He was a dedicated scholar of comparative religions and new religious movements, and he approached his studies with the same curiosity and discipline that shaped the rest of his life. His inquisitive mind is reflected in his many thoughtful writings. He was a former Commander of the American Legion, and he valued the fellowship that came with this association.

His life was one of service in many forms, and his legacy will endure in the lives he touched, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave so freely. Though he is no longer present in body, the memory of Reverend Dr. Charles Emil Cairo will remain a source of comfort and inspiration to those who knew and loved him.
