David Han

David Han passed away at the age of 81 in the morning on November 26, 2022.  A long time resident of the Hyde Park area of Chicago, David was born in China to the late Reverend Dr. Paul Han and Margaret Han on March 24, 1941. As a boy in Beijing, he was the inspiration for, and the protector of his little sister, Mary.  Arriving in the US as a teenager, he quickly learned English and went on to pursue advanced degrees in computer science and mathematics from the University of Michigan.  Soon after completing his two master's degrees he worked as a computer science engineer at Goodyear in Akron, Ohio where he raised his two daughters -- Grace who died June 11, 2011 and Joyce who lives in Maryland.  David later returned to Chicago and completed his PhD which he used in his second career as a college professor. 

David was a great lover of classical music and became quite skilled on the violin during his younger years.  He was also a devotee of the martial arts and achieved high levels of competency in tai chi and kung fu.  While in his second career he became the primary caregiver of his parents.  He also was able to pursue his hobby of collecting and raising bonsai trees and orchids which continued into his retirement years.

David was the devoted oldest brother of his siblings Mary, Luke, and Dorothy who all affectionately called him "Ge Ge".  He was "Grandpa" to Grace's children Joshua and Emily and to Joyce's children Amanda and Randall.  He was Uncle David to his many nieces and nephews - Ryan, Tina, Dee, David, Lauren "Suzy", Adam, Alanna, and Jack as well as all of his grand nieces and nephews - Ethan, Preston, Will, Sophie, Molly, Maya, Luke, Sebastian and Tyson.  David will also be dearly missed by his cousin Yu Hsu, her husband Ming, and their daughter Hannah Guo who were steadfast friends to him and his supplier of many tasty treats over the years. 

David enriched the lives of all of us and will be sorely missed.
