Irene S. Benjamin-Sonty

Irene Sukalatha Benjamin-Sonty, of Oak Park, IL, left us peacefully on Friday, October 4, 2019, at home after a three-year battle against autoimmune and heart diseases.

Irene was born in Yadgir, Karnataka State, India, born to John and Ponnamma Benjamin. She immigrated to Chicago, Illinois on August 2, 1969, and became a United States citizen in the late-1990s. Irene earned her Bachelor of Science in Accounting at DePaul University. She went on to work in the not-for-profit field and corporate banking.

While she had hobbies, all were immensely outweighed by Irene's devotion to help and fight for the vulnerable and struggling, particularly women and children, and more specifically, orphans.

Irene is survived by her son Alexander, his wife Genevieve, and her beloved grandchildren Clyde and Malcolm; her brother John; her brother George, his wife Sarah, and her nephew and nieces Steven, Rachel, and Leah; her ex-husband Guillermo; her Aunt Padma Ezra; and a treasured extended family.

The visitation and memorial service will be held at 10:00a.m. October 10, 2019 at First United Methodist Church of Oak Park, IL. In lieu of gifts and flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and/or the ACLU, which were reflections of her experiences and faith.
