James William Madden passed away at his home in Oak Park, Illinois on February 2, 2023. He was surrounded by his family including his wife of 37 years Leslye Madden, son John, and daughters Olivia and Lara. James was also father to Maria Grace Madden who passed away at a young age.
James grew up in River Forest, Illinois where he attended St. Luke School and Fenwick High School. He treasured his childhood summers with parents Joe and Margaret, siblings Joe, Mary, John, and Maggie, and many friends with whom he remained close across decades. He went on to earn both Bachelors and Masters degrees in History at Marquette University. As a student James spent a year in Spain, a place which he always remembered fondly and where he developed a lifelong love of quality espresso. His fascination with history and global affairs persisted even through his final days and his prodigious intellect never faded.
James worked in a variety of fields throughout his life starting as a lifeguard in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin where the Madden family vacation home is located. James was a reporter, a social worker, and a commodities broker before embarking on a 30-year career as an Investigator with the Cook County Public Defender’s Office. He worked diligently in a profession which displays the struggles of humanity on a daily basis, yet remained affable, optimistic, and sensitive to the beauty in the world.
As a parent, James loved unconditionally and offered steadfast support. He returned to Lake Geneva with his own family and created countless wonderful memories. James drove his children around the country to visit colleges and was always available to listen without judgment, advise gently, and help in any way possible. He was an endless source of fun to his two grandsons, who lit up in his presence.
Everywhere James went, he made a lasting impression on those he met, even briefly. His sense of humor and wit were unrivaled, and he could spark an enjoyable and substantive conversation with strangers from any walk of life within moments.
James is survived by his brother John and sisters Mary and Maggie, wife Leslye, children John, Olivia, and Lara, and grandsons Jack and Will. He will be sorely missed but the effect that he had on those around him will allow him to truly live on.
