Lillian Weiland Obituary

Lillian was born in Oak Park Illinois on August 16, 1924 to Rheinhold and Elsie (Kroeger) Milas.  She had one sister, Lorraine (Milas) Miller who passed away in September 2017 at the age of 92.  They lived in Berwyn Illinois during their early grade school years and moved to Hannah Ave in Forest Park Illinois where she lived for most of the next 60+ years.  She graduated from Proviso High School in 1942.  Eventually back problems made it impossible to stay in her home and she moved to the Altenheim Senior Apartments in Forest Park where she resided until moving to The Scottish Home in 2012.  She was a long-time member of St John Lutheran Church in Forest Park.

She married Richard Weiland on August 27, 1952 and remained married until Richard’s death in 1987.  They had two children, Richard Weiland Jr and Kathleen (Weiland) Phipps.  Lillian has one grandchild, Jessica (Phipps) Giovenco.  During her children’s school years, she was a stay-at-home mother who frequently participated as a room mother for their classes.

From the 1960’s through the 1990’s Lillian was very active in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary where she served numerous terms as president or treasurer of the organizations in Maywood and Forest Park.  It was during their membership at the Maywood Post that she and Richard ran a weekly Saturday night steak dinner and later a weekly Friday night chicken dinner where Richard did the cooking and Lillian was a server.

Her father developed kidney failure in 1966 from which they did not expect him to survive.  However, he did survive for approximately 11 years during which time he remained in the same home with Lillian and her family.  During his last 5 to 6 years, he was totally bedridden and required 24 hour care with Lillian providing the majority of that effort.

Upon her father’s passing, Lillian took a position as a server at Homer’s Restaurant on Madison Street in Forest Park.  At the closing of that establishment, she became a server at the Pines Steak House.  She stayed at that job until her back issues forced her to retire in the early 1990’s.

During the Spring of 1987 Lillian’s husband was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and passed away in October 1987 at the age of 65.  Once again Lillian was the primary caregiver during his illness.

As her back problems intensified Lillian was no longer able to live by herself and she moved into The Scottish Home in 2012.  During part of her residence, she served as the President of a Resident’s Group where it was her responsibility to run their meetings.
