Mary McGoohan Price, 78, a longtime Oak Parker who had retired to Columbus, Indiana before returning to Oak Park in her later years, passed away on December 17th 2019 at Belmont Village Senior Living in Oak Park. Born on October 26, 1941 in Brownsville, Texas, the youngest daughter of Mary (Thornham) and Edward McGoohan, she married John Edward Price in Evanston, Illinois on June 28, 1968. Shortly after, Mary and John settled in Oak Park. Mrs. Price studied at Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas (B.A) and at Loyola University of Chicago (M.A. and PhD.). Her degrees were in Philosophy and English Literature (specifically 18th Century English Literature), and Mary used her education as a professor at Rosary College in River Forest, then later in a long career as a writer and editor for various professional journals and for such publications as "Who's Who in America". During her time in Oak Park Mary was active in various community organizations, including West Suburban PADS (now known as Housing Forward), and on the flower and music committees at her congregation (Beacon Unitarian Church and then Unity Temple Unitarian Universalist Congregation). An avid gardener, Mary and John's home was also featured on various house walks and in commercials. Their Fair Oaks home also was awarded a "Cavalcade of Pride" award by the Village of Oak Park. In June 1999, Mary and John settled to Columbus, Ind., where they enjoyed a quieter life of biking, hiking, and of course tending to their garden. Mary continued her volunteerism as a tutor for the local school reading program and participated in the Community Hot Meals program for a decade. She was also a member of Columbus Shakespeare Club, and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus. Her survivors include her son, James Brendan Price (Susan Mitchell) of Oak Park and her daughter, Alison Price (Douglas Askham) of Oak Park; her brother, Edward McGoohan; her grandchildren, Conor Bernoski Price, Nathan Thompson, Nicholas Thompson, Ian Askham and Anne Askham; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Unity Temple in Oak Park on Monday January 20th, 4:30 PM, with a reception to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
