Marie Therese “Murielle” Petersen, age 93, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Riverside, Illinois, on December 31, 2025.
Murielle was born on August 16, 1932, in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, to the late Alfred and Marie-Anne Pelletier. After completing nursing school, she worked as a flight attendant for Air Canada. During that time, she met her beloved husband, Theodore A. Petersen. They were married on September 8, 1956, began their family in Baltimore, and eventually settled in Angola, Indiana, where they raised their children.
Murielle was a dedicated and compassionate nurse who served the Angola community for several decades, primarily at Cameron Memorial Community Hospital. For more than 38 years, she was a highly regarded member of the nursing staff, forming many lasting and meaningful relationships. She deeply cherished being part of the nursing community.
A devoted member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Murielle attended daily Mass with her close circle of friends. Known as a true prayer warrior, she was rarely without a rosary in hand. Her faith was central to her life, and she found great joy in making pilgrimages to attend Mass and visiting religious shrines around the world.
Murielle was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend. She was an avid reader with an extensive library of religious books and loved dancing and singing to the music of her era. Time spent with family brought her the greatest happiness, especially during spirited games of Rummikub and giant Jenga at the lake. She never forgot a date and was never late.
She will be fondly remembered for her warm smile, infectious laughter, honesty, gentle sarcasm, easygoing nature, her signature blueberry supreme, and her generous, selfless heart that always put others first. Her deep devotion to God, the Blessed Mother, and the saints defined her life. Murielle’s legacy lives on in the love she shared and the countless lives she touched.
Murielle was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Petersen; her son, Mark Petersen; and her siblings, Joseph Pelletier (the late Tish) and Claire McNeil (the late Don).
She is survived by her siblings, Marcelle (the late Lomer) LeBlanc, Jean-Bernard (Louise) Pelletier, and Jean-Paul (Henriette) Pelletier; her children, Michelle (Arthur Jr.) Sundry, Ted Petersen, and John (Dania) Petersen; her daughter-in-law, Vicki Petersen; her grandchildren, Arthur (Francesca) Sundry, Maggie (Michael) Stephany, Cassie Petersen, John Paul Petersen, Mathew Petersen, Kristen Petersen, Lauren Madigan, Daniel Petersen, Kevin Petersen, Anna Petersen, and Nate Petersen; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews
